The Portland men's tennis team is off to Hawaii this week to play a neutral site match against BYU before taking on host Hawaii. The Pilots will take on BYU on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. (PT) at the UH Tennis Complex before playing the host Rainbow Warriors on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m.
The Pilots (2-1) have started the spring dual season off strong with a pair of 7-0 sweeps of Belmont and Portland State, along with a road loss at Oregon.
The Rainbow Warriors (1-2) defeated Gonzaga by a 4-3 margin and lost to nationally-ranked California and Washington by 6-1 margins at home to open the 2026 season.
The Cougars (1-0) were 6-1 winners against Weber State in their debut match of the season.
"I think the last time I took the team to Hawaii was my second year coaching in 1999," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "I remember having a great time and some good matches but just the logistics and the budget never worked out since. Hawaii needed a late addition to their schedule and are providing awesome hospitality. Our first outdoor matches typically aren't until early March, but this is a great opportunity to play a couple of quality teams early in the season and get some of our outdoor legs under us for our bigger trips down the line. BYU and Hawaii are both teams that could be in the national rankings, but we have played well and are going to go there and give ourselves a shot."
