SAN BRUNO, Calif. – University of Portland point guard Joel Foxwell earned his league-leading seventh West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week honor after averaging 27.5 points, 5.5 assists and 2.5 steals in two games.
Foxwell continues to re-write the school record books as he broke the Portland freshman single-game scoring record with 35 points and added eight assists and two steals Wednesday versus Pepperdine. Foxwell was 13-for-23 from the field and 7-of-8 at the foul line. The previous record was established by Reggie Logan with 32 versus Pacific on November 26, 1976.
He also set the new school record for assists in a season during the game passing Alec Wintering's record from the 2015-16 campaign (187). Foxwell now has 193 assists and counting. He also broke the Pilot freshman single season scoring record established last season by Austin Rapp (428) and is at 464 through Saturday's game at Seattle U.
The Melbourne, Australia native finished with 20 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals at Seattle U on Saturday. It was his 11th 20-point game of the season.
Foxwell leads the WCC in assists and ranks No. 1 nationally among freshmen and No. 6 overall for total assists (196). His 6.8 assists per game rank 12th nationally also tops all freshmen. Foxwell's 16.0 points per game is tied for fifth in the league overall, while his 18.4 average in WCC games is No. 3.
The Pilots are back in action this Wednesday on the road against the No. 11 Gonzaga Bulldogs with a 6 p.m. tip-off. Portland then closes out the regular season at home versus San Diego on Saturday at 1 p.m.
