PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots split their doubleheader against the UConn Huskies on Saturday, dropping the first game and taking Game 2 to even the series. See below for recaps of both contests.
GAME 1
The Portland Pilots gave up five runs in the seventh inning to drop the first game of the doubleheader 8-5. Portland fell to 8-7 with the loss.

Brady Bean and Dakota Chun were solid at the plate in Game 1, with each batter going 2-for-5 with a home run. Bean drove in three runs and Chun drove in two. Cole Katayama-Stall and JT Landwehr each went 2-for-4 at the plate as well. The Pilots had five runs off 11 hits, with seven different Pilots recording a base knock.

Four pitchers made appearances for the Pilots, with Trey Newmann going six innings in the start. He had five runs count against him and four strikeouts. Kaden Segel officially took the loss, going one inning with two runs and three hits conceded. Nolan Umlandt made his season debut, going two-thirds of an inning and Alex Via closed it out, going an inning and a third.

UConn scored the first two runs with RBI hits in the first and third innings. But Portland took the lead for themselves in the bottom of the fifth. Bean hit a three-run homer for his third dinger of the season, then Chun hit his first homer as a Pilot, bringing in two more runs to make it 5-2 Portland.

The Huskies scored five runs in the seventh inning to retake the lead and put the Pilots in a hole. Portland failed to get back on the board after that, with the Huskies bringing in one more run off an RBI double in the eighth to put the score at its final of 8-5.

Game Notes
- Bean and Chun both went 2-for-5 with a home run, with Bean driving in three runs and Chun two.
- Bean's home run was his third of the year and Chun's his first. Chun becomes the seventh Pilot to homer this season.
- Bean's three home runs are tied for the most on the Pilots. His seven multi-hit games are also the most by any Pilot this season.
- Newmann's reached a season-high six innings pitched, becoming the only Pilot to throw at least six innings twice.
- Segel took the loss for Portland.
GAME 2
The Pilots got key runs late and fended off the Huskies with the bases loaded in the ninth to earn the 8-6 win over UConn. The win puts Portland at 9-7 overall.

Jonas Salk and Leo Cote each went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI's. Salk's home run was his third of the year and Cote's his second. Salk is the third batter to reach three homers on the season. Carter Stewart was the only other batter to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Dakota Chun and Brady Bean each recorded RBI's as well.

Logan Anderson was solid in his start, going five innings with just two unearned runs allowed, five hits and six strikeouts. Anderson's six strikeouts are both a season and a career high for the southpaw. Trey Swygart earned the win, going 3.2 innings with four runs allowed and one earned. It's his second win of the year. Alex Via earned the save with a key strikeout to give the Pilots the win with the bases loaded.

The Huskies once again opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second inning. Portland responded quickly with a homer from Salk, a run walked in and a run on a fielder's choice. Portland led 3-1 through two innings.

The bats went silent until chaos ensued in the sixth inning. Taking advantage of crucial Pilot errors, the Huskies took back the lead with four runs in the sixth off an error and a big home run from Chris Polemeni. The homer made it 5-3 Huskies.
That lead didn't last long. An RBI double from Salk and a two-run homer from Cote put Portland back up 6-5 in the same inning. Dakota Chun brought in another run with an RBI single to left center in the bottom of the seventh, then Carter Stewart nailed an RBI single up the middle to put it at 8-5 in teh eighth. The Huskies scored one run in the ninth and loaded the bases with two outs to go, but Via closed it out with the strikeout to split the series at one a piece. The Pilots won 8-6.

- Salk and Cote went 2-for-4 each with a home run and two RBI's.
- Salk has three home runs on the year while Cote has two. Salk is one of three Pilots with three home runs this season.
- Cote is the fifth Pilot to record multiple home runs this season.
- Anderson went five innings with six strikeouts and just two unearned runs allowed. His six strikeouts are both a season high and a career high.
- Swygart earned the second win of his Pilot career, going 3.2 innings with just one earned run allowed.
- Via earned the second save of his Pilot career, earning the final strikeout.
