GREENWOOD, Ind. – Portland Pilots Baseball had three student-athletes make the College Sports Communicators All-Academic Team on Tuesday, with Carter Gaston, Cole Katayama-Stall and Jonas Salk all making the team.
In order to qualify for the honor, a student-athlete must post at least a 3.5 GPA while participating in at least 90% of an institution's games or starting in at least 66% of a team's contests. Pitchers must have made at least 17 appearances or pitched 35 innings over the course of a season.
Gaston earns the honor for the third time in his career, the most of any Pilot in program history. Gaston threw 35.2 innings over 11 appearances (nine starts) and posted a 4-3 record with a 4.79 ERA. The WCC Pitcher of the Year in 2024, Gaston finished his career with Portland tied for seventh all-time in wins (18) and with the single-season record for wins in 2024 with 11.
Katayama-Stall brought the power for the Pilots this season, leading the team in home runs (10), doubles (11), RBI's (39) and slugging percentage (.506) and also stealing 13 bases to lead Portland. In the West Coast Conference, Katayama-Stall was third in stolen bases, sixth in walks (37) and seventh in home runs (10). He also had 19 walks in conference play to rank seventh in the conference.
An WCC All-Academic Team selection as well, Salk played in all 52 games for Portland this season, batting .218 with six home runs, 11 doubles and 32 RBI's. His 11 doubles were tied for the team lead. He was hit by 15 pitches this season, which ranked third in the conference. He finished his career as Portland's all-time leader in hit by pitch at 48 and was also ninth in career home runs (24) and tied for 12
th in RBI's (110).
The Pilots finished the 2026 season at 27-25 overall, marking the fourth time in five seasons they've finished above .500 and that they've posted at least 25 wins or more.
