ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. --- Senior Taryn Kuida and freshman McKennon O’Rourke both placed in the top 20 to pace the Portland Pilots at the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational, which concluded at the Cypress Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday. It’s Kuida’s third top-20 finish this fall, while it’s the first collegiate top-20 placing for O’Rourke.
Kuida showed off a steady game, firing a 76 on Monday and a 77 on Tuesday to tie for 15th place at the two-round tourney. Her nine-over par was 153 was one stroke better than O’Rourke, who finished in a six-way tie for 19th.
O’Rourke followed an opening-round 76 with a 78 on Tuesday.
Xavier’s Mary Beth McKenna, who opened with a three-under par 69, claimed medalist honors after firing a one-under 143. Jennifer Bermingham of UC Riverside and San Jose State’s Cristina Corpus tied for second place, three strokes back of McKenna.
San Jose State easily won the team title, bettering runner-up Sacramento State by 12 strokes. The Spartans topped the 19-team field with a 598. Behind Sac State came UC Riverside with a 613, tournament host Cal Poly with a 614 and Bradley, which totaled a 617.
The Pilots placed 11th as a team, but were only five strokes out of seventh place. Portland finished one spot and six shots better than conference rival Gonzaga after totaling a 629 (310-319) at the tourney.
UP junior Paige Rachor finished out of the top 20 by a single stroke. Her plus-11 155 (77-78) was good for a tie for 25th place overall. Behind Rachor came sophomores Bridget Gleason (167) and Sandra Jefferies (172).
The Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational was the last event on the fall schedule for the Pilots. Portland is next slated to take the course in February for the Lady Braveheart Classic. The two-day event is set to begin on Feb. 9 at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.
