HOLLISTER, Calif. --- In her first West Coast Conference Championships, freshman Sara Banke looked liked a veteran en route to a final-round 73 (+1) and a tie for 15th place overall to lead the Pilots at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club. Banke’s final round featured an eagle 2 on the par-four first hole.
Banke, who earned All-WCC Honorable Mention, improved her score during each round to finish with a total of 236. Her 73 was tied for the second lowest score during the final round.
The Pepperdine Waves, who are ranked No. 20 in the country, featured the tourney’s top three individual finishers and easily ran away with the team title. Pepperdine’s team score of 880 (+5) was 35 strokes better than runner-up Gonzaga. UP placed eighth.
Grace Na finished one stroke ahead of her teammate Danielle Kang to claim medalist honors. Na shot a four-under par 68 during the second round and totaled a plus-one 217 for the championships. Kang fired a 218 and Pepperdine teammate Kaitlin Drolson placed third with a 220. San Francisco’s Tinna Johannsdottir was the highest non-Pepperdine finisher, coming in fourth with a 223.
Junior McKennon O’Rourke was seven spots back of Banke with a 248, senior Lisa Okazaki finished with a 255 and senior Bridget Gleason posted a 266.
