PULLMAN, Wash. --- Senior Taryn Kuida tied for 11th place overall as the Portland Pilots opened the 2008 season at the NW Dodge Dealers Inland Cup, which concluded on Wednesday at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club. Kuida finished with a 15-over par 228 (75-77-76) on the par 71 course.
Kuida was the top finisher for the Pilots, who finished eighth as a team. Portland was consistent with rounds of 313, 313 and 311 to finish with a 937 overall at the 11-team event.
Tournament host Washington State easily claimed the team title, besting second-place Nevada by 22 strokes. The Cougars finished with an 881 and were followed by the Wolfpack (903), Sacramento State (921), Montana (922) and Boise State (929).
The Pilots finished just three strokes out of sixth place.
Melanie DeLeon of Nevada held off three Wazzu golfers to claim medalist honors. DeLeon shot a one-over par 214 (71-69-74) to finish two strokes better than runner-up Jessica Black of Washington State. WSU’s Amy Eneroth (218) was third, while teammate Kristen Allard (221) was fourth.
Kuida just missed a place in the top-10, finishing a stroke back of four golfers.
Sophomore Kalyn Dodge opened the fall strong with three rounds in the 70’s. Dodge shot a total of 235 (79-79-77), which was good for a tie for 27th place. Junior Paige Rachor, who tied for 29th, was Portland’s next top finisher. Rachor was one stroke back of Dodge, after posting rounds of 77, 77 and 82.
Freshman McKennon O’Rourke had her best collegiate round so far, firing a third-round 76 on Tuesday. O’Rourke tied for 32nd with an overall score of 238. Sophomore Bridget Gleason also played for Portland, finishing with a 261.
The Pilots next take the course at the Giustina Memorial Classic at the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore. The two-day tourney tees off on Monday, Sept. 23, and will also feature the Pilot men in their first action of the fall.
