BEAUMONT, Calif. --- Portland junior Paige Rachor and freshman McKennon O’Rourke both finished in the top 15 to pace the Pilots at the Lady Braveheart Classic, which began and concluded on Tuesday at Oak Valley Golf Club. The two-day tourney was shortened to 18 holes after Monday’s opening round was wiped out by rain.
Rachor and O’Rourke shot identical 79’s (38-41) to tie for 14th place at seven over par. Portland totaled a 323 as a team to finish in seventh place, one spot better than WCC foe Santa Clara. The Pilots were just three strokes shy of finishing in the top four.
Nova Southeastern took home the team title after totaling a 305 at the 14-team event. Eastern Michigan was second with a 312, host UC Riverside’s ‘A’ squad finished third with a 316 and Drake (321) and Cal State Northridge (321) rounded out the top five.
Malin Thorberg of Cal Baptist claimed medalist honors after firing two rounds in the 30’s (38-35) to finish with a one over par 73. Miki Ueoka of Santa Clara was a stroke back in second place, and Eastern Michigan’s Stephany Fleet, Nova Southeastern’s Taylor Collins and Ashlee Yee of Riverside tied for third place with a 75.
Portland senior Taryn Kuida just missed a top-20 finish. She tied for 21st after firing an 81 (41-40). Sophomore Kalyn Dodge tied for 47th with an 84 (41-43) and fellow sophomore Lisa Okazaki finished with an 88 (45-43).
The Pilots are next scheduled to take the course at the Red Rocks Invitational at the end of the month. The two-day tourney begins on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Oak Creek Country Club in Sedona, Ariz.
