PORTLAND, Ore. --- Matt McCallister, a right-handed pitcher from Phoenix, Ariz., has committed to the University of Portland baseball program, announced head coach Chris Sperry. A senior at Pinnacle High School, McCallister has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Pilots as a freshman next fall.
“Matt is quality pitcher who has a lot of potential,” said UP pitching coach Larry Casian. “He has a great split-finger fastball and he’s very enthusiastic about joining the program. He is a hard-worker and a solid student who will contribute to our program and the University immediately.”
The 6-foot-2 McCallister was named first-team all-region as a senior this spring after helping lead the Pioneers to the state playoffs for the second straight season. He went 6-1 on the hill during his senior campaign and posted a 3.17 ERA to earn the team’s pitcher of the year award. McCallister struck out 45 in 42.0 innings of work, tossed three complete games and landed on the academic all-star team.
