Pilots Wrap Up Fall with Impressive Doubles Showing

STANFORD, Calif. — Facing a strong field and the Northern California rain, the University of Portland women’s tennis team posted it’s best doubles performance of the fall season as sophomore Valeska Hoath and senior Lacey Pflibsen reached the Round of 16 at the 2010 ITA Northwest Women’s Regional at Stanford University.

The tournament began play outside at Stanford’s Taube Tennis Center and in the singles draw senior Stephanie Fuchs and Hoath were knocked out early with two set losses. Senior Lacey Pflibsen won her match in the Round of 128 in two sets over Molly Aloia of Saint Mary’s.

Advancing to the Round of 64, Pflibsen was knocked off by Washington senior Lina Xu in two sets. Pflibsen’s loss marked the end of singles action for the Pilots fall season.

The doubles draw provided success for the University of Portland as Hoath and Pflibsen defeated Molly Aloia and Diana Bukajeva of Saint Mary’s. Advancing to the Round of 32, the Pilots doubles team took out Cal Poly’s Jocelyn Davis and Ashley Pane.

As the rain got worse tennis officials moved the tournament inside to the Plexicushion Championship Court. Doubles action indoors began with the Round of 16, where Hoath and Pflibsen were defeated by No. 2 seeded Denise Dy and Venise Chan of Washington.

With the conclusion of the ITA Northwest Women’s Regional, the University of Portland women’s tennis team wrapped up the fall season. The Pilots return to competitive action at home against Montana on January 28, 2011.
