PORTLAND, Ore. (Feb. 26, 2010) --- The Portland Pilots have again changed the weekend baseball schedule due to forecasted weather patterns. Friday’s scheduled game with the Seattle Redhawks at Joe Etzel Field remains postponed, while the Pilots and Redhawks have changed Saturday’s double-header to a single game starting at 1 p.m. and will play a Sunday double-header beginning at 11 a.m.
The Pilots and Redhawks hope to make up Friday’s postponed game later this season.
The Pilots are 3-0 this season, while Seattle enters the weekend at 0-3. The Redhawks reinstated baseball this year after dropping the program in 1986.
Portland opened the 2010 season with home wins last weekend over George Fox and Concordia. The Pilots are batting .367 as a team and are led by junior OF Tyler Thompson, who has six hits in eight at-bats (.750) and four RBI’s. Sophomore SS Kris Kauppila (.600), junior OF Craig Smith (.556) and junior 2B Riley Henricks (.538) are all batting better than .500 thus far, while Smith has driven in a team-high five RBI’s.
Junior right-hander Zach Varce, who is slated to start the opener on Saturday, is 1-0 with a 3.00 earned run average. He also has nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched. Also scheduled to start this weekend for the Pilots are sophomore right-hander Kyle Kraus (1-0, 6.14 ERA) and junior southpaw Scott Burris (0-0, 8.10). Kraus will take the hill for the morning game on Sunday with Burris getting the nod in the afternoon affair.
Junior transfer Chris Dennis, a right-hander, already has two saves this season with an ERA of 1.80
