PORTLAND — The University of Portland women’s tennis team picked up victories Friday and Saturday against Portland State and Linfield, as the Pilots topped the Vikings 5-2 and Wildcats 6-0 at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
Against the Vikings (1-5), the Pilots (4-3) picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, before four singles victories starting with sophomore Sabine Fuchs. The transfer from Oregon took the first set 6-3 before dropping the second set to Portland State’s Anya Dalkin. In the final set Fuchs was impressive and earned a 6-0 set win and clinched the victory over Dalkin.
Portland’s No. 4, 5 and 6 singles players earned two set victories helping to secure the Pilots win over cross-town rival Portland State.
On Saturday the Pilots dropped Linfield (0-1) 6-0, with the No. 5 singles position not finishing its match.
Portland sent out a shuffled line-up with Stephanie Fuchs at No. 2, Alice Tucker at No. 3 and Beate Valdmane at No. 4. Also, seeing their first action of the spring and competing in their first dual match of their careers freshmen Gabrielle Gorence and Emily Mahairas played No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Mahairas won her first match of her career in dual play in straight sets. Gorence, competing in her first collegiate singles match won the first set before the match was suspended.
Portland next takes the court Friday at 12 p.m. against Lewis-Clark State College inside the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
