Van Steenbergen Leads Women to First Place Finish at WPC Open; No. 5 Men Finish Second

PORTLAND, Ore. --- Merel van Steenbergen ran her first 5k of the season on Saturday, finishing the Warner Pacific Open in a time of 17:22.14 to claim first place by 11 seconds to lead the Portland Pilots women’s cross country team to a first place finish at Lents Park.
 
Running unattached, Alex Dillard placed second on the men’s side with a time of 24:37.29. Stephen Kersh finished third with a time of 24:53.23 to lead the No. 5 men’s team to a second place finish with Chris Borg (25:04.41) and Cody Wells (25:07.32) also placed in the top 10. Griffin Hay (25:12.65), also running unattached, placed tenth.
 
The women’s team claimed the top spot as the team scores were announced, edging second-place Northwest Christian by seven points. Portland’s Andrea Dettman (18:43.52), Maddie Hibshman (18:47.78), and Tori Zellerhoff (18:48.21) helped the Pilots to the field-best 56 points on the day.
 
Both teams have just one meet remaining before the West Coast Conference Championships as the Pilots tune-up next weekend at the Beaver Classic.
