PORTLAND, Ore. --- After Portland had pulled within six points early in the second half, the Portland State Vikings embarked on a 17-3 run to take control of the scoreboard before eventually claiming a 64-49 win over the Pilots in a non-conference women’s basketball game played on Sunday afternoon at the
Stott Center.
The Vikings (5-1), who led by 10 at the half, pushed the lead to 13 points two minutes into the second stanza before the Pilots (1-7) would climb back into the game. Freshman Ellen Nurmi buried a three-pointer from the top of the key and sophomore Jasmine Wooton followed with a lay-up.
And after freshman Annika Holopainen drilled a shot from behind the three-point arc, the Pilots were within 38-32 with 14:09 remaining. The six-point deficit was the closest the Pilots had been since nearly mid-way through the first half.
But the Vikings responded with seven unanswered points to push the lead back to double figures. The run would continue as Portland State soon led by 20 (55-35) with six minutes left to play.
The Pilots tried to make a late run, cutting the deficit to 12, but the Vikings would hold on for the win over their cross-town rivals.
The Pilots struggled from the field for the second straight game, finishing 17-for-58 (29.3 percent) from the floor as a team. Portland hit five three-pointers and went 10-for-14 at the free throw line.
Portland State countered with a 43.6 shooting percentage, while the Vikings also connected on five three’s and shot 11 of 16 at the charity stripe. PSU claimed a slight 40-38 edge on the boards.
Wooton was the only Portland player to score in double figures, finishing with a team-high 11 points. Junior Amy Pupa grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds to go along with eight points and four blocked shots, which matches a career high.
Courtney VanBroklin scored a game-high 20 points to lead three Portland State players in double digits.
The Pilots had trouble finding their range in the first half as the Vikings were able to jump out to a 22-8 lead 14 minutes into the game. The shots eventually started dropping for the Pilots and a three-pointer from Wooton cut the deficit to nine points late in the first half.
Cassandra Thompson then hit a shot down low to pull the Pilots within seven before Portland State entered the halftime locker room with a 27-17 advantage.
The Pilots next return home to host the Nevada Wolf Pack on Friday at the Chiles Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
