Ryan Kawulok scores a goal in a friendly against Chivas USA
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Former Portland Pilots defender Logan Emory is the newest member of Toronto FC, while his former teammate Ryan Kawulok signed with the Portland Timbers two weeks ago. Emory has spent the past two seasons playing for Puerto Rico of the NASL, while Kawulok was drafted by the Timbers in the MLS Supplemental Draft in January.
Both Emory and Kawulok were instrumental during Portland’s run to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2009. Emory (2006-09) appeared in 81 matches during his career at UP, finishing with five goals, two assists and 12 points. He earned WCC Honorable Mention twice, and he landed on the league’s all-freshman team in 2006.
Emory, a native of Boise, Idaho, helped the Islanders win the 2011 USSF Division 2 Pro League Championship.
Kawulok (2008-11), who started all 82 games during his four-year UP career, was named the 2011 WCC Defensive Player of the Year, becoming only the second UP player to ever land the league’s defensive player of the year award. Kawulok finished his career with 10 career goals, earned all-league honors all four years and he was named to the All-WCC First Team twice.
A native of Fort Collins, Colo., Kawulok has spent the past two summers playing for the Portland Timbers U-23 team. As the starting center back in 2010, he helped the U-23’s go a perfect 20-0-0 and win the USL’s Premier Development League Championship. He was named to the PDL All-Conference Team in both 2010 and 2011.
The 2012 MLS regular season officially began last Saturday. The Portland Timbers opened with a 3-1 win against Philadelphia on Monday, while Toronto’s next game is the second leg of a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal match-up against Los Angeles on Wednesday.
