DEXTER, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots women’s rowing team captured its second straight Collegiate Team Efficiency Trophy at the Covered Bridge Regatta, which took place on Saturday at Dexter Lake. The Pilots, who also won the collegiate trophy at last year’s event, were powered by first-place finishes by both their first eight and second eight ‘A’ crews.
The second eight ‘A’ began the day by finishing well ahead of runner-up Western Washington, who are currently ranked second in the nation at the NCAA DII level. The Pilots registered a time of 7:31.40, while the Vikings were 11 seconds back.
Portland’s second eight ‘B’ crew covered the course in a time of 8:03.65.
UP’s first eight then won its event by a half a length over second-place WWU. The Pilots posted a time of 7:09.45, which was about a half a second better than the Vikings.
The regatta was then delayed briefly by a passing squall before racing resumed in windy conditions. Portland’s first four battled a strong head wind to register a time of 9:31.68, which was good for a third-place finish behind Western Washington and fellow Division II power Humboldt State.
Portland’s second four was second to the Vikings with a time of 8:38.67, while UP’s novice eight was scratched.
In the team standings, the Pilots combined for a score of 85.00. WWU was second with a 76.88 and Humboldt State finished third with a score of 62.22.
The Pilots return to the water next weekend with a dual meet against Seattle University in Seattle, Wash.
