GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The waters are ready for Portland Pilots rowing, who open the season with a regatta at Lake Natoma, the Sacramento State Invitational.
Racing begins at 8:30 a.m. with the varsity four. The second varsity eight will compete at 8:50 a.m., the varsity eight 9:10 a.m. and the third varsity eight at 9:20 a.m. The Pilots will get the chance to test themselves against several WCC schools, with their conference mates, the Sacramento State Hornets, hosting the invite and the Saint Mary's Gaels and the Santa Clara Broncos all competing.
The Pilots were picked to finish seventh in the WCC this season, with Jo Patton and Rachel Hester both making the All-WCC Preseason Team for the first time in their careers.
Last season was a solid one for Pilot rowing, who picked up key wins at various points in the season. The Pilots won at the Puget Sound Invite and Portland Invite last season and also had all four competing boats make the grand finals for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. At the WCC Championships, the second varsity four qualified for the grand final in a revamped conference championship while the second varsity eight took first at the petite final for their first win ever at the WCC Championships.
See below for lineups and race times for all Portland teams ahead of Saturday's races.
