GOLD RIVER, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots capped a solid season by tying for third place at the 2013 West Coast Conference Championships on a bright and sunny morning at Sacramento State Aquatics Center on Lake Natoma. The Pilots, who are in just their second season competing as an NCAA Division I program, finished behind only conference champion Gonzaga and runner-up San Diego.
“We’re very happy with the result and it shows this team is continuing to move in the right direction,” Portland head coach Bill Zack said. “Congratulations to Gonzaga who will be representing the conference at the NCAA’s, and that’s the level to which we aspire.”
The Bulldogs won both the first eight and second eight races and receive the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
In the final point standings, Gonzaga finished with a total of 41 points. Last year’s champion San Diego won the varsity four race to start off the morning and finished with 37 total points for second place. Portland, Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary’s College each finished with 23 points for a three-way tie for third, while Creighton (15 points) and Santa Clara (6 points) rounded out the competition.
In the day’s first event, Portland’s four finished in a time of 8:00.2, which was good for a fourth-place finish. San Diego’s four crossed the finish line just 1.9 seconds ahead of Gonzaga to claim first place.
Portland’s second eight then placed third with a time of 7:12.6 and finished behind only Gonzaga (6:51.6) and San Diego (7:01.6).
In the day’s final race, Portland’s eight posted a time of 7:00.2, while Gonzaga finished first to claim the 2013 conference title. The Bulldogs’ time of 6:39.6 was a mere 1.3 seconds ahead of San Diego, giving Gonzaga its 13th WCC title in program history.
UP senior Mia Tarte and junior coxswain Hannah Dahlem were both named to the WCC All-Conference Team following the event.
“Hannah has been instrumental this year,” noted Zack. “She’s really helped raise the level of the rest of the coxswain core and a lot of the credit for the team’s success goes to her. Mia is the ideal model of the type of athlete that we’re trying to encourage to join the team.”
Gonzaga’s Glenn Putyrae was named the WCC Coach of the Year, while San Diego’s Kaitlin Soper was named WCC Coxswain of the Year by the conference’s head coaches. San Diego’s Michelle Campbell was named WCC Newcomer of the Year and Madison Keaty earned Gonzaga’s second straight WCC Rower of the Year award.
