SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Portland sophomore midfielder Eddie Sanchez landed on the All-West Coast Conference Men's Soccer First Team for the second year in a row to lead six Pilots total to receive postseason recognition, it was announced on Tuesday.
An injury forced Sanchez to miss the first six games of the season, but he still tied for the team high with five goals, three assists and 13 points. Sanchez was named the league's freshman of the year in 2013
Junior defender Hugo Rhoads was named to the All-WCC Second Team after earning honorable mention accolades as a sophomore. Rhoads is an outside back who scored one goal and registered three assists, while also helping the Pilots post four shutouts on the year.
Earning All-WCC Honorable Mention for the Pilots are seniors Derek Boggs and Michael Escobar, along with freshmen Erik Edwardson and Brandon Zambrano. Boggs, a defender who had a goal and two assists this fall, earned all-conference recognition all four years at Portland. Escobar matched Sanchez with five goals and three assists.
Edwardson totaled three goals and two assists in his first season on The Bluff, while Zambrano notched a hat trick during a 5-1 win at Saint Mary's on Oct. 3. Zambrano, who was named the WCC's Player of the Week following his outburst against the Gaels, also landed on the league's all-freshman team.
The San Diego Toreros captured four of the five major individual honors as senior midfielder Connor Brandt was named the WCC Player of the Year and senior defender Julian Ringhof collected Defender of the Year accolades. Saint Mary's senior Andre Rawls was tabbed as the Goalkeeper of the Year, while San Diego goalkeeper Thomas Olsen was selected as the Freshman of the Year.
San Diego's Seamus McFadden won Coach of the Year honors.
All five individual awards - including the all-conference teams - were voted on by the WCC's eight head coaches.
