Box Score (pdf)PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots swept the Seattle University Redhawks on senior night at the Chiles Center. Honored before the match were Portland's three seniors Bea Loper, Katie Mardesich, and Jacky Rodriguez who all end their careers on a high note with the teams seventh win of the season.
Portland (7-23, 1-17 WCC) beat Seattle (14-17, 8-6 WAC) with set scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-19.
Three quick points in the beginning of the set gave Portland the lead that would not be relinquished during the first set. Freshman Maddy Mandon continued the scoring for the Pilots with a kill down the line to put Portland ahead of Seattle 13-10. Sophomore Brittney Markwith earned her second service ace to give Portland a five point advantage at 19-14. Then a huge defensive effort by the Pilots set them up for set point which junior Emily Liger hit home for her second kill of the set. Katie Mardesich did well to keep the ball of the floor with seven digs.
Portland again jumped out to an early lead in the second set with the aid of a four point run that ended with a Markwith service ace that put the Pilots up 6-1. An 8-2 run by Portland increased the lead over Seattle to 12 at 21-9. The Redhawks responded with a four point run to close the gap to nine, but the Pilots finished out the set and took the 2-0 advantage heading into the break. Liger registered five kills during the set to lead Portland.
A pair of pancakes led to sophomore Monica Gajda hitting the ball over the net turning a sure Redhawk point into a Pilot point early in the set. Portland used the early momentum to go ahead of Seattle 8-4, but Seattle had a three point run which pulled them within two of the Pilots at 12-10. Mandon responded with a kill on the next point which sent Portland on a three point run of their own to expand the lead to five. The Pilots controlled the rest of the set and Liger hit home her team high ninth kill of the match to earn the set and match win. Portland was led by Loper during the set who recorded five kills.
In their final match in Pilot purple, Loper had eight kills with an attack percentage of .333 and Mardesich recorded 12 digs.
