Box Score Video HighlightsLAS VEGAS, Nev. – UNLV guard Cody Doolin made a layup with 0.4 seconds left in overtime to give the Runnin' Rebels a 75-73 come-from-behind win over the Portland Pilots Wednesday night at the Thomas and Mack Center.
Doolin also made the key play to force overtime with an assist to Dwayne Morgan for a layup as time expired to tie the game.
The Pilots (7-3) led by eight points with less than three minutes remaining, but the Runnin' Rebels (7-2) closed regulation with an 8-1 run and capitalized on a Portland turnover with 17 seconds left to force overtime.
Playing without leading scorer Kevin Bailey for the third straight game, the Pilots got big contributions from various players. Portland led for a majority of the game and the final 17:22 of regulation before Morgan's layup.
Senior Riley Barker made his first start of the season as the Pilots went with a big lineup that included Thomas van der Mars and Volodymyr Gerun as well. Barker finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.
Sophomore point guard Alec Wintering led the team with 24 points and five assists, including numerous clutch baskets in the second half and overtime. His back-to-back layups in the final minute of overtime each tied the game.
Gerun added 11 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. He also came up big in overtime with a put-back and three straight free throws to tie the game with 10 seconds left, setting up Doolin's layup.
Portland executed its game plan to perfection, dominating the boards with a 38-30 rebounding margin, including a 16-8 edge in offensive rebounds that led to a 21-12 difference in second chance points.
Offensively the Pilots were able to consistently get good looks, but struggled to knock down shots consistently.
Portland shot 44 percent from the field, 4-of-14 from three-point range, and 11-of-13 at the free throw line. UNLV finished at 49 percent overall, 4-for-18 from beyond the arc, and 13-of-15 at the foul line.
UNLV improves to 4-0 all-time against the Pilots, while Portland falls to 1-2 in overtime games this season. The Pilots opened the year with an overtime win at San Jose State and then lost in extra time to Oregon State at home on Dec. 6.
Portland will return home for its final two non-conference games beginning on Saturday at 7 p.m. versus Montana State. The Pilots then host Lewis & Clark on a Monday matinee with a 2 p.m. start time. The Pilots will open West Coast Conference play on the road at San Diego on Saturday, Dec. 27 and then travel to BYU on Monday, Dec. 29.
