Box Score Radio HighlightsVideo HighlightsPORTLAND, Ore. – Junior guard Bryce Pressley scored a team-high 17 points as the Portland Pilots cruised to an 87-60 victory over the Montana State Bobcats Saturday night at the Chiles Center. Portland had ten players score four or more points and four reach double figures on the night.
Portland sophomore point guard Alec Wintering dished out 11 assists in just 23 minutes of action. Senior center Thomas van der Mars added 12 points and freshman guard D'Marques Tyson chipped in 11 off the bench.
Senior forward Volodymyr Gerun had another efficient game with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. He added four rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and three steals. Freshman guard Jason Todd finished with six points, a season-high eight rebounds and three assists.
After a slow start that saw the Bobcats (3-8) take a 9-4 lead, Portland 13-1 run midway through the first half to gain a double digit lead. That margin would grow to 50-29 on a pair of free throws by freshman Gabe Taylor just before halftime.
The margin would get no closer than 17 in the second half and the Pilots (8-3) would lead by as much as 29 points late.
Portland shot 55 percent from the field, made 10-of-20 three-pointers and 11-of-15 free throws. The Pilots also had 25 assists and just 10 turnovers.
Montana State finished at 37 percent overall, 5-for-17 from beyond the arc and 19-of-24 at the foul line. The Bobcats had 11 assists and 14 turnovers. Portland also outrebounded Montana State by a 31-26 margin.
Portland was without leading scorer Kevin Bailey (foot) for the fourth straight game and he will be re-evaluated weekly.
The Pilots will have a quick turnaround and then close out the non-conference schedule on Monday afternoon with a 2 p.m. tip-off against Lewis & Clark at the Chiles Center. Kids 6th grade and younger will receive free admission. Portland will open West Coast Conference play next weekend at San Diego on Saturday and then travel to BYU for a Dec. 29 matchup in Provo, Utah.
