Complete Release (pdf)LAKEWOOD, Wash. --- Portland's varsity eight and second eight both overcame brutally windy conditions to win their respective races by open water at the Daffodil Sprints, which took place at American Lake on Saturday morning. The Daffodil Sprints are the first official event of the spring for the UP women's rowing team.
"Rowing in strong winds and chop is a good test of boat handling, power, and mental toughness," Portland head coach Pasha Spencer said following the event. "The conditions were challenging, but we handled them well."
Portland's first eight began the day by defeating both Seattle and second-place Western Washington, which is an NCAA Division II national power and has claimed seven national titles since 2005. Portland posted a time of 8:16.1 in the windy conditions.
UP's second eight followed with a first-place finish of their own, also defeating Western Washington for the top spot. Portland's time of 8:28.7 was 14 seconds clear of the second-place Vikings. University of Puget Sound was third with a time of 8:49.2.
Portland's novice eight took second place, finishing behind Seattle U and ahead of Oregon.
Portland raced two boats in the varsity four event, which was claimed by the Western Washington crew with a time of 8:37.3. The Pilots' 'A' boat was second with a time of 8:43.0. The Pilots also raced a novice four, which finished fourth.
The Pilots next head south for the San Diego Crew Classic, which is scheduled for next Saturday in San Diego, Calif. The Pilots will also send some boats to the Lewis & Clark Invite next weekend.
