Long Beach State Invitational ResultsWALNUT, Calif. --- The busiest weekend of the season for the Portland Pilots Track & Field teams was highlighted by a successful Friday. Included in the plethora of competitors was Korey Thieleke, who broke a 34 year old school record in the 400 meter sprint twice! On Friday, at the Mt. SAC Relays, he finished the race with a time of 47.21, and then at the Long Beach State Invitational he won the meet with his time of 46.82.His time qualifies him for NCAA Regionals and ranks him 19th in the West Region.
At the Mt. SAC Relays, Lauren LaRocco finished the women's 5000 meter with a time of 17:38.80, while Chris Borg placed 12
th overall in the men's race with a time of 14:15.88. On Thursday, the 10,000 meter crew showed well, including finishes by Alex Dillard and Keegan Symmes, who both finished 15
th in their heats with times of 30:08.54 and 30:32.36, respectively.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational, freshman Taryn Rawlings placed first in her heat and second overall in the 800 meter with a time of 2:09.46. The Portland Pilots 4x400 team featuring Madison Leek, Katherine Maus, Hannah Souders, and
Taryn Rawlings placed seventh in the field of 14, with a time of 3:54.43. In his first meet of the outdoor season, Nathan DeVaughn was able to long jump 22' 8.50" to place 22
nd in a field of 54. Katherine Maus continued her historic season with a fourth place finish with a jump of 40' 6.25". Woody Kincaid placed seventh overall, while teammate Ryan Poland finished in 16
th with times of 3:43.68 and 3:44.98, respectively, in the 1500 meter run. In the final heats of the day, Justin Rocereto placed first in his 5000 meter heat with a time of 14:42.81 and an overall 22
nd place finish, while, on the women's side, Grace McConnochie finished 30
th overall in a field of 138, with a time of 17:23.62.
Saturday's Long Beach State Invitational featured short distance runners, jumpers, and a javelin thrower. Katherine Maus finished ninth in the triple jump with a distance of 40' 7.79". Nathan DeVaughn covered 21' 0.50" in the long jump. Kaylie Van Loo ended up in 17
th place in a field of 31 in the javelin throw with a distance of 130' 0.05". Hannah Souders finished her 100 meter heat with a time of 12.96.
The Pilots will return to action next week at the Mt. Hood Invitational in Gresham, Ore.
