PORTLAND, Ore. --- Caleb Webb has signed his National Letter of Intent and will join the Portland Pilots men's cross country team for the 2015 season as announced by head coach Rob Conner. The Big Bear, Calif. native is one of the top high school runners in the nation.
Â
"Caleb may be the most significant recruit we have ever signed," said Conner. "He is a tremendous student and extremely serious runner. Very few high school runners are ready to make an impact at the college level as freshmen but Caleb is the kind of talent that will. I couldn't be more excited to have him joining us."
Â
Webb, who competes for Big Bear High School, is a two-time California division 4 cross country state champion. In his senior season he placed third at the 2014 Nike Cross Nationals—which took place at Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland—with a time of 15:21 for the 5k course. On the track, he most recently finished third at the Arcadia Invitational in the 3200 meter. His time of 8:52 is currently ranked third in the nation.
Â
"His range is incredible but we think he will lean toward the longer distances," continued Conner. "I kind of see him as a David Kinsella or Scott Fauble as far as cross country goes. On the track he glides very similarly to Woody Kincaid."
