Sept. 30, 2015Hi,
These past two weeks were a good couple of weeks; last week we came off two good performances, winning against Washington State, who were previously undefeated, and this past weekend beating Denver University in Denver.
Besides the positive team efforts, we had a couple other exciting things happen. Last week at practice, Luis Robles joined us. If you don't know who Luis Robles is, then here is a picture of him at his job to give you a better idea:
He currently plays in the MLS for the New York Red Bulls. He is also an alum of the University of Portland. The Red Bulls were here in Portland to play the Timbers and in his free time he stopped by to talk a little to our team, which was cool. The coolest part was the stories he told. The team's favorite one by far included Lisa, our assistant coach. Luis and Lisa lived in the same dorm (Shipstad) when they both played here. Apparently every week, members of the men's and women's soccer teams got together to "get fat" on pizza. Now, anyone who currently knows Lisa knows that she is very health conscious. I will even go as far as to say she is one of the healthiest eaters I know. So, when this fun fact was revealed, the whole team let out a collective, "LISA!!!! PIZZA???" Which was quickly clarified with, "I only had half a slice." Sure, Lisa, sure.
Another super exciting thing happened after our Denver game. After the game, we thought we would all just walk back to the vans, stopping quickly to say hellos and goodbyes to friends and families who attended the game. But we were greeted by something better (sorry friends and family): Christine Sinclair. We were all pretty excited. We all introduced ourselves, sharing fun facts like that Sarah, Rachel and I had her uncle as a coach, and that Parkes is also Canadian. We all got a team photo, but the best pic, by far, is the one Dieks and Alyssa snagged with her.
This isn't the last time we will be seeing Christine Sinclair, though, because she and the 2005 National Championship winning team will be back on campus Oct. 17-18 to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of that historical year.
This is something we are all really excited about because a big reason why a lot of us chose to play for the University of Portland can be attributed to the alumni. They made history for our school and not only did they inspire us, but they inspired the nation. Every day I feel proud to represent a school that so many amazing players and people were and are a part of. And I hope that one day this team can leave a legacy like that of the 2002 and 2005 teams.
Needless to say, we love the alums. Hopefully when we see them, they can share some stories that will top Robles'.
See ya soon.
Deuces,
HGB
