EUGENE, Ore. – Portland junior Goutham Sundaram won both the Yellow Draw singles title on Sunday as the Pilots completed action at the Duck Invitational hosted by Oregon at the Student Tennis Center. Sundaram won all four of his matches in straight sets, including a 6-2, 7-5 decision against Sandro Lena of Nevada in the finals.

Sundaram also paired with junior Jamie Fisher to reach the finals of the doubles draw before losing a close decision to Oregon's Thomas Laurent and Cormac Clissold, 8-6.

"We finished the fall pretty strong," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Goutham claimed the title and the B flight, which was really nice to see. He and Jamie were also right there with a very good Oregon team in the doubles final, but just couldn't get over the hump. It was very encouraging to see those two play good doubles this weekend."

Sundaram's path to the title included wins over Sam Larson (Portland State), Jonathan Aremon (Nevada) and Ethan Young-Smith (Oregon) before knocking off Leno on Sunday morning.

Portland finished the tournament with a 11-13 overall singles record and 6-4 in doubles action. The Pilots were without juniors Michail Pervolarakis (ill) and Alex Wallace (injured).

Joining the Pilots at the 2016 Duck Invitational was host Oregon, Portland State, Nevada and Gonzaga.

"We come home with a lot of feedback from this weekend," Gross noted. "I think everyone knows exactly what they need to do to get better at this point. Now we just have to keep putting in the work. The fall season was very encouraging. I think we are still considered a relatively young team, but feel pretty mature in terms of the experience we have gained through the last couple of seasons and this fall."

Portland will open the 2017 spring season by hosting Seattle University on Jan. 27 at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
