PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's men's and women's cross country teams will both race at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championships Saturday morning in Terre Haute, Ind. The women's 6K will begin at 8 a.m. (PT) and the men's 10K will follow at 9 a.m. (PT).
This is the No. 9 Portland men's 17
th appearance at the NCAA Championships. The Pilots took second last week at the NCAA West Regionals, earning them an automatic bid to nationals. Redshirt sophomore Nick Hauger led the charge for the Pilots with a sixth-place finish. All seven Portland runners finished in the top-30, with a 28 second difference between the Pilots first and seventh runner. The same team will run at this weekend's championships.
"The team is excited and ready to go! We had a great season and have done the work necessary to run with any team here," said head coach Rob Conner, "We just need to execute and I think everyone will be happy with the outcome."
The No. 14 women earned their first ever appearance at nationals with an at-large bid from an extremely successful season. The Pilots took the individual and team title at the West Coast Conference Championships a few weeks ago, the first since 2008. Junior Lauren LaRocco has led the Pilots this season with top-10 finishes at every race and is the two-time WCC Runner of the Month. Portland will run the same squad at the NCAA Championships as West Regionals, except for the addition of Courtney Cox in for Parkes Kendrick, who unfortunately will be missing the meet as a finalist for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.
"The team is really excited and everyone is ready to run hard," said head coach Ian Solof. "It's a bummer not having Parkes, but I'm confident in this group and I know they will battle for every place. This is a great team and I look forward to seeing what they can do."
