TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's cross country teams capped their successful seasons on Saturday morning with a solid performance at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championships, which were held at the LaVern Gibson Championships Cross Country Course on a windy and cold Saturday morning.
The Portland men finished 13th overall among the elite field, while the women placed 22nd in their first ever team appearance at the NCAA's.
Junior Lauren LaRocco claimed All-American honors for the Pilots, placing 29th individually. Portland, which entered the day ranked 14th nationally, finished 22nd overall with 509 points.
A two-time All-American on the track, LaRocco covered the 6k course in a time of 20:17.8. Seniors Anne Luijten and Anna Farello followed LaRocco, finishing 111
th (20:53.2) and 124
th (20:56.1), with sophomore Taryn Rawlings was close behind finishing 147
th (21:02.9). Junior Mathilde Sagnes (22:04.0) concluded the scoring for the Pilots.
"The team did a very nice job in very tough conditions," said head coach Ian Solof. "This group made history this season and I'm proud of everything they did including finishing as the 22nd best team in the nation."
Ninth-ranked Portland, who were making their 17
th overall appearance at the championships, combined for a team score of 368 points. The top-15 placing matches the program's eighth best finish ever at the NCAA's.
Graduate transfer Brady Johnson, who spent some time with the lead pack, led the Pilots by finishing 69
th (30:41.0), and junior Jeff Thies was one spot back in 70
th (30:41.5). Tim Ball and Stephen Mulherin finished close behind, crossing the line 81
st (30:45.8) and 91
st (30:49.5), and Danny Martinez was Portland's fifth finisher and placed 150
th (31:14.8).
"The team ran tough under very difficult conditions," said head coach Rob Conner. "Although 13
th is not the team finish we were hoping for, it was a very good result in the densest national meet I have ever seen. Brady and Jeff did a fantastic job and finished only 14 seconds from the final All-American spot. Tim and Stephen were only a few seconds back. We had an excellent four second split from our first to our fourth man which was amazing. Danny, Timo, and Hauger did a good job of battling, but they were 29 seconds back which ultimately hurt us a bit. At the end of the day, we got a great effort from all seven guys. they did their best. Hats off to those teams that beat us. They were just a little better today. For the last six months these guys have given me everything I could ask for in hard work and dedication. I am very proud of their commitment to the process."
