Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior RHP Davis Tominaga tossed 7-plus quality innings, but the Oakland Golden Grizzlies handed the Portland Pilots a 4-0 defeat Saturday afternoon in a nonconference affair at Joe Etzel field.
Portland (4-2) and Oakland (2-4) were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first seven innings before Oakland opened the eighth with three consecutive hits to chase Tominaga.
After back-to-back singles, Myles Zilinsky lined a 3-2 fastball into right center field, scoring Matt DiLeo and giving Oakland two runners in scoring position with nobody out.
The Pilots bullpen limited the damage by trading a run for two outs on the 6-4-3 double play. Zilinsky came around to score later in the inning on a well-placed drag bunt
Tominga (1-1) kept Oakland off-balance until the eighth. He finished the day with four runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking none.
Oakland scraped across the game's first run with a two-out rally in the third. OF Ryan Fitzgerald blooped a 1-2 pitch down the left field line for a double. He would score on Ben Hart's single two batters later.
Portland threatened to tie the game in the frame's bottom half after loading the bases on a walk and two hit batsmen. Oakland's Jake Lee (2-0) managed to escape the two-out jam with a ground ball but still labored through the inning with 32 pitches.
Lee lasted 5.0 innings, allowing two hits and two walks. He struck out one before Chris Van Dyke took over. The Pilots nearly got to Van Dyke in the sixth, again loading the bases. Van Dyke induced an inning-ending double play as Oakland clinged to the 1-0 lead.
Freshman OF Cody Hawken impressed the crowd again on Saturday with a spectacular catch to end the fifth inning. Mike Zilinsky drove a 1-0 pitch to deep left field that looked destined for a double before Hawken sprawled out at the last minute, snatching the slicing flyball and ending the threat.
Portland used five pitchers on the afternoon, with freshman RHP Cameron Richman making his collegiate debut. He struck out two of the three batters he faced.
The two teams conclude the four game series with a doubleheader on Sunday. The first game features Pilots southpaw Jordan Horak (0-0, 6.75 ERA) against Joe Buchalski (0-0, 2.25). Following the 11:00 AM game, Portland's Kevin Baker (0-0, 20.25) will square off against Tyler Palm (0-1, 9.00).
