PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots will be in Santa Monica, Calif. this weekend for the inaugural West Coast Conference Beach Volleyball Championship. Portland will first take on San Francisco on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Ocean Park Beach.
Pepperdine is currently the second ranked team in the country and enters the WCC tournament as the number one seed. Loyola Marymount, Pacific, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, and Santa Clara will round out the competitors for the first ever WCC beach volleyball championship.
The Pilots have drastically improved during their first season despite not being able to train in sand every practice.
"Our team has worked extremely hard over the last few months and have gotten substantially better at the beach game," stated co-head coach Jeff Baxter. "We are ecstatic for the opportunity to compete in the inaugural WCC Championship for Beach Volleyball and look forward to the challenges that other WCC teams will provide."
Following the WCC Championship will be the beginning of competition for the first ever NCAA National Championship. The NCAA announced beach volleyball as the 90
th championship during the summer of 2015.
