Complete ResultsPORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots varsity eight just missed a first-place finish in the Petite Final at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday morning as Fordham claimed the top spot, topping the Pilots by three-tenths of a second.

The Pilots covered the 2000-meter course in 7:31.361, while Fordham posted a time of 7:31.051.

Portland advanced to Sunday's Petite Final after placing fourth in their heat on Saturday, missing third place by a second and second place by just 2.5 seconds. There were three varsity eight heats on Saturday, with the top two crews advancing to the Grand Final, which also took place on Sunday.

"In the heats we had a good first 1000 meters, and today we had a better second 1000," said Portland head coach Pasha Spencer. "The sprint was good, but we got caught in the last breath of the race. Lesson for next weekend is to put it all together for Covered Bridge, and we're ready to do that."

Behind Portland in the Petite Final was Sacramento State and George Washington in third and fourth place, respectively. League rival Saint Mary's was well back in fifth place, and St. Joseph's finished sixth.

The race was delayed after a foggy morning on Mission Bay.

The Pilots next head to Dexter Lake just outside of Eugene, Ore., for the Covered Bridge Regatta, which will take place on Saturday.
