Box Score FRESNO, Calif. --- The Pilots ended the Bulldog Showdown with sweep over host Fresno State on Saturday afternoon at the Save Mart Center. After opening the tournament with two setbacks on Friday, dropping the first two games to DePaul and crosstown rival PSU, the Pilots bounced back to end the weekend with a win and set scores of 25-14, 25-17, and 25-20
Portland took the lead early in the first set 9-6, which was fueled by several blocks from Sarah Savoca and Brittney Markwith. A pair of aces from Hannah Troutman along with an ace from freshman Emma Scanlan increased the gap by six, bringing the score to 13-7. Reghan Pukis, Katie Sullivan, and Markwith then notched a flurry of kills to help the Pilots jump out to an impressive 12-point lead. The Bulldogs tried to rally, but Markwith claimed the final point with a kill, leading the Pilots to a 25-14 win.
Set two consisted of a back-and-forth struggle for the first five points. Portland then took the lead, capitalizing on several errors from Fresno State and an ace from Savoca to make the score 10-5. The Pilots then surged ahead with three kills from Pukis, and several more errors from Fresno State and a kill from Savoca made the score 21-12. The Bulldogs then tried to hold on with a pair of kills, but Pukis disrupted the momentum to make the score 22-16, and the Pilots ultimately took the set 25-17.
Fresno Sate came out strong in the last set with a pair of kills from Aleisha Coates, allowing the Bulldogs to lead 6-3. An ace from Robinson and a couple of kills from Troutman and Markwith helped the Pilots bounce back to tie it up 8-8. Sullivan, Savoca, and Pukis then gained some momentum to put together several kills to make the score 16-13. Fresno State fought to come within two of the Pilots, but Savoca and Sullivan worked together to make some key blocks to end Fresno State's momentum. An ace from Savoca and kill from Troutman ended the set 25-20, sealing the sweep.
Markwith ended the match with a hit percentage of .700 and seven kills for the Pilots. Troutman and Pukis both registered double digit kills for the match, recording 10 and 12 kills respectively. Freshman Cali Tompson notched 33 assists and Savoca recorded three aces and four blocks. Sullivan, Markwith, and Troutman also registered several blocks for the match, putting together a strong collective defensive effort for the Pilots.
The Bulldogs, who entered the weekend 4-0, drop to 5-2. Hannah Troutman also recieved All-Tournament Honors for the weekend.Â
Portland evens their record at 3-3 on the season. They will be back in action at home next weekend for their North Harbor Marriot Invitational at the Chiles Center.
