PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland men's tennis team continued its run of signing high-impact recruits during the early signing period. Head coach Aaron Gross announced on Friday at Leo Hibi (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge Tennis Academy) signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Pilots as a freshman in the fall of 2018.
Hibi, a four-start recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net, joins five-star prospect Nicklas Oberg and four-star Issa Yoshida as members of Portland's 2018 class.
Hibi has been ranked as high as No. 112 nationally at the 18s age group for singles. He is ranked No. 70 in the Southern California Open Division, No. 20 in his singles age group, and No. 7 in the region for doubles.
He reached the CIF Quarterfinals in doubles last year after winning the Pacific Coast League doubles title and earned All-County doubles honors from the Orange County Register. Hibi was also a first team All-PCL singles selection after posting a 50-4 singles record.
"Leo is the first recruit from Southern California that we have had in quite a while," Gross said. "We feel fortunate to have him as we think he is a little bit under the radar. With a little bit more experience Leo has the potential to be a very good college player. As he gets into college and gets physically bigger and stronger, I think it will make a big difference in his game. He definitely has been around high-level tennis as his sister has been ranked amongst the top 200 players in the world as a professional."
Portland won its first West Coast Conference regular season championship last year, finished the season with an 18-3 overall record and was ranked No. 48 in the final ITA National Rankings. The Pilots just missed the NCAA Championships, but return nearly the entire roster. Pervolarakis, ranked No. 95 in the fall, headlines a roster that features seven seniors this season.
Gross, the 2014 and 2017 WCC Coach of the Year, is expecting more 2018 recruits to sign during the November early signing period.
