NOTE: Due to weather forecasts, the women's race has been moved up to 6 a.m. (PT) and the men's at 7 a.m. (PT). The Pilots watch party will start at 7 a.m. in the Pilot House
PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots men's cross country team and individual qualifier Taryn Rawlings will compete Saturday, Nov.18 at "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kent. Rawlings will compete first for the Pilots in the women's 6k at 6 a.m. (PT), followed by the men's 10k at 7 a.m.
The Portland men earned an automatic bid last weekend at the West Regional by claiming the individual and team title and returned to the national top-5 at No. 4 in the USTFCCCA polls. The Pilots will run the same squad that edged Washington 63 to 65 led by sophomore Emmanuel Roufolff-Levisse, senior Jeff Thies (FloTrack's No.23 top men's individual), and junior Nick Hauger, who went 1-2-4. The No.4 ranking marks the highest Portland has been ranked this late in the season since 2009, when they were also fourth prior to NCAAs.
Rawlings has also had a solid cross country season, placing 14
th overall at the West Regional by finishing the 6k race in 19:53.7 to earn an individual qualification to the national meet. The Pilot placed 48
th at NCAA Pre-Nationals and 16
th at conference as well.
"Taryn ran great at regionals and executed a perfect race," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "We both knew she was capable of this based on her training but it takes a lot of toughness and confidence to go out and actually do it. Given that her previous two races didn't go that well and the west region is brutally competitive, I'm especially proud of the attitude and composure she showed in qualifying for NCAAs. The goal this weekend is simply to race the same way: smart, tough, and aggressive."
Portland athletics will host a watch party for the 2017 NCCA Cross Country Championships in the Pilot House on Saturday on the University of Portland campus. The doors will open at 7 a.m., and coffee and food will be provided.
