PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's cross country teams will compete this weekend at the Dellinger Invitational in Springfield, Ore., and the Charles Bowles Invite in Salem. This is the first competition that both teams have had in over three weeks, since their last competition, the Oregon Preview, was cancelled due to the summer fires.
Both teams will race first at the Dellinger Invite on Friday at the Springfield Golf Club. The men's 8k will begin at 10 a.m., and the women's 6k at 11 a.m.
"We are very much looking forward to the big meet in Eugene especially since the first meet was cancelled," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "Our roster is a bit in flux as we have a number of guys sick or coming off sickness so we will evaluate the lineup at the end of the week. I am excited to see the healthy guys run, they have worked hard and are in great shape."
The No.18 ranked Pilots will feature juniors Gabriel Haughey and Logan Orndorf, as well as sophomore Tristan Peloquin. Peloquin and Haughey both competed at the Roy Griak invitational last year, helping the Pilots secure a first-place finish. Orndorf also made an appearance with the varsity squad last season at the WCC championships, where the Pilots placed second just behind then-No.4 BYU.
Several of the women's top runners will also compete at the Dellinger Invite, including junior Taryn Rawlings and freshman Jasmijn Lau. Rawlings was a key harrier in Portland's varsity squad last season, ultimately helping the Pilots to a 22
nd place finish at their first ever NCAA Championships. Lau joined the program this season with prestigious accolades, which most recently include winning the 5000m at the European Championships. She also placed fourth at the European Cross Country Championships last fall.
"I'm really excited for this weekend," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "Part of the fun will be seeing how everyone does since this is our first varsity race. Training has gone really well and I know we have some young people who are ready to step up. This is a national class meet up front so it will be good preparation for the meets to come."
The Pilots will then head to McCulloch Stadium and Bush Park to race in the Willamette Invitational on Saturday morning. Again, the men's 8k will state first at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women's 5k at 10:20 a.m.
Sophomores Erik Holm and Michael Murphy, as well as freshman Henry Hayes, will lead the Portland men at Willamette.
"We have a long history of running at Willamette so I always like to compare our guys to the performances of the past," said Conner. "We have a competitive team entered so we will try to win the meet."
The Portland women will only run three harriers at Willamette, freshmen Emily Bechen, Alexandra Newsom and sophomore Karli Piaia.
