THIS WEEK
• The Portland Pilots men's and the women's cross country teams will open their seasons this Friday, Sep. 4 at the Linfield Harrier Classic in McMinnville, Ore.
• The men's 6K will kick off the races at 10:30 a.m., with the women's 4K event following shortly after at 11:15 a.m.

• The Pilots men's team will feature 10 competitors: Boden Alderson, Matthew Cordova, Jax Corvin, Dalton Kaines, Adam Lippe, Elliot McIntosh, Mason Morical, Collin Penuel, Aaron Rovnak and Canyon White.
• The Pilots women's team will be represented by 11 athletes: Danica Allen, Giana Atkinson, Camryn Bishoff, Aubrey Eaton, Licia Ferrari, Katelyn Galloway, Clare Herring, Faith Johnson, Avery Owen, Natalia Vazquez-Trejo and Brooke Williford.
THIS SEASON
• The Pilot men are ranked first in the 2026 WCC Cross Country Preseason Coaches Poll, receiving 49 total votes and seven first-place votes. This marks the fourth year in a row that the Pilot men are favored to finish first in the WCC Preseason Polls.
• Pilots Anthony Giesch and Cameron Stein make 2026 WCC Preseason Team.
• Giesch helped the Pilots take runner-up at the WCC Championships last season, and PR'd in the 10K with a time of 30:10.1 at the NCAA West Regionals where he placed 33rd overall.
• Stein has been selected for the preseason team two years in a row and earned All-WCC Second Team in 2024 when he helped Portland take the Team Title.
• The Pilot women are also ranked first in the 2026 WCC Cross Country Preseason Coaches Poll, receiving 59 total votes and three first-place votes.
• Three women made the 2026 WCC Preseason Team: Megan Crum, Viola Paoletti and Latham West.
• Crum finished 11th overall at the 2025 WCC Championships and made All-WCC Second Team with a 20:43.32 6K.
• Paoletti ranks No. 554 in the world for the 5,000m with a time of 16:19.83 and received gold at the 2022 European Youth Olympic Festival for the 3,000m while wearing the Italian flag.
• West finished third at the 2025 WIAA State XC Championships during her senior year of high school and holds a 5K time of 17:28.1.
• Portland's women added five Incoming freshmen to the roster while Pilot men welcomed 18 freshmen to the bluff.
LAST SEASON
• Freshman Megan Crum finished her standout debut season by leading the Portland women at the 2025 West Coast Conference Championships, placing 11th overall in 20:43.32 to earn All-WCC Second Team honors. Her performance paced a young Pilot squad to a fifth-place team finish.
• The Portland men delivered a runner-up finish at the WCC Championships. Graduate student Jonas Price placed third in a personal-best 23:15.83, followed by Kgadi Monyebodi (6th, 23:36.58 PR) and Nolan Hosbein (7th, 23:42.09 PR), with all three earning All-WCC First Team honors.
• Pilot women finished 23rd at the NCAA West Regionals with Crum leading the pack. Crum placed 78th overall with a 6K PR of 21:16.6.
• Pilot men finished in fifth place at the NCAA West Regionals with Jonas Price leading the Portland runners. Price finished fifth overall with a 10k PR of 29:26.1, which sent him to the NCAA DI Championships. Price and Kgadi Monyebodi both earned All-Region Honors.
• Price finished out his last season with a 10K PR at the 2025 NCAA DI XC Championships. Price ran a 29:21.1 and placed 65th overall. He comes back to UP for the 2026 cross country season as an assistant coach.
• The Portland Pilots men's cross country team opened their 2025 season with a second-place finish at the Lewis & Clark XC Opener on Friday morning at Milo McIver State Park. The Pilots scored 49 points as a team, placing behind Boise State (17) and ahead of Portland State (86). Portland's top finisher, Collin Penuel, claimed fourth overall with a personal-best time of 15:12.55 in the 5K.
• Portland men totaled 41 points to finish second at the Gator Cross meet, just behind Western Washington's winning score of 35. The Pilots were led by Jacob Hupke, who won the race in 17:59.7, a personal best. Four of Portland's five scorers set personal bests, with Carson Helmer placing seventh in 18:11.3, Estanis Ruiz eighth in 18:12.2, and Collin Penuel 11th in 18:23.9. Cohen Williams rounded out the scoring group in 14th at 18:36.3.
• The men's cross country team captured the team title at the 50th Charles Bowles Invitational, improving on last year's sixth-place finish. The Pilots placed five runners in the top 12, led by individual champion Eliason Kabasenche, who won in 23:39.75 (PR).
• Graduate student Jonas Price led the way for the Portland men's cross country team with a top-20 finish at the prestigious Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, clocking 23:38.3 to place 20th overall in a deep national field.
• Men's cross country had a 25th-place team finish at Nuttycombe with 575 points, supported by strong performances from Nolan Hosbein, Kgadi Monyebodi, Trey Gannon, and Anthony Giesch.
• At the Linfield George Oja Invitational, the Portland men finished second overall, totaling 87 points behind Eastern Washington. Jacob Hupke led the charge with a fifth-place finish in 23:58.90.
• The women's cross country squad totaled 136 points on the day to open the 2025 season with a fourth-place team finish at the Lewis & Clark XC Opener on Friday at Milo McIver State Park.
• Women's Cross Country earned their first win of the season, taking first in the Ash Creek Festival in Monmouth, Oregon. Selena Bangerter was the top runner on the day for Portland, finishing the 5K in 17:51.3 to take third in the contest.
• The women's team earned a third-place finish at the Mike Johnson Classic on Saturday, scoring 97 points in a 14-team field hosted by Western Oregon.
• Women's cross country team turned in a strong performance at Linfield, placing second overall with 59 points. Freshman Megan Crum continued her impressive debut season by running a personal-best 20:23.20 to finish second overall.
PILOT HISTORY
• The Portland men's cross country team has made 23 appearances at the NCAA Championships, with 18 of those resulting in top-20 team finishes under longtime head coach Rob Conner.
• Their most impressive performances came in back-to-back years, placing second in 2017 and third in 2018.
• On the women's side, the Pilots have qualified for the national meet three times, highlighted by a program-best 12th-place finish led by head coach Ian Solof in 2018.
COACHES' ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• Rob Conner enters his 36th year leading Portland's men's cross country and track & field programs.
• During Conner's tenure, the Pilots have earned 24 NCAA Championship berths and 10 Top-10 national finishes. Conner guided the team to a program-best second place in 2017 and a third place in 2018, while also collecting 35 WCC titles.
• Conner has been named West Region Coach of the Year seven times and WCC Coach of the Year nine times.
• In 2024, Conner was inducted into the WCC Hall of Honor before leading Portland to another championship title and receiving WCC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year recognition in the Fall.
• Since 1995, Ian Solof has directed the Pilot women's distance program, bringing consistent success and growth.
• A former standout runner for Portland himself, Solof has guided the women's team to milestones such as a No. 5 national ranking in 2016 and a 12th-place finish at the 2018 NCAA Championships. His teams have captured 20 WCC titles, while several of his athletes have achieved All-America status.
• Solof's achievements have earned him WCC Coach of the Year honors seven times, underscoring his role as one of the program's most accomplished leaders.
