LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Portland sophomore Tom Hann defeated Daniel Gealer in three sets on Friday afternoon to move on to the main singles draw of Southern California Intercollegiate Championships, hosted at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
Hann won the super tiebreaker by a 10-6 margin after splitting the first two sets. He advances into the main draw singles tournament and will open against Stanford's Timothy Sah on Friday at 10 a.m. in the opening round.
"Tom didn't play great, but he competed very well," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "He kept his composure even when things weren't going well. Tom played great for the last 10 or 15 minutes of the match, which I think gives him some good momentum going into the main draw tomorrow."
Joining Hann in the main draw is fellow Pilot Carlos Donat. The lone senior on the Portland roster, Donat will face Matheus Leite of Texas Tech at 11:30 a.m.
The duo will also team up for qualifying doubles action beginning on Saturday.
