PROVO, Utah. --- Redshirt senior Nick Hauger ran a phenomenal race in the men's 8k at the WCC Championships pulling away in the final moments of the race to claim the WCC individual title. On the women's side, Lauren LaRocco also ran with the top pack for the majority of the race, leading the Portland women to a second place finish, with a second place individual finish of her own.
Â
The four Portland men behind Hauger to help secure the second place team finish were redshirt sophomore Riley Osen (24:03.40), redshirt junior Caleb Webb (24:08.00), and redshirt sophomore Reuben Kiprono (24:12.00) in 10
th, 12
th, and 14
th place, respectively. Redshirt freshman Evert Silva was the fifth man to cross the line for the Pilots in 16
th place (24:20.10). Hauger joins the long list of Portland men who have claimed the individual title at the WCC championships, the most recent Pilot being David Perry in 2014.Â
"I am really proud of how the team did today," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "It is really difficult to come to this altitude and get the job done. Hauger was spectacular! He beat several of the best runners in the NCAA today on their course. Pretty impressive!"
Â
On the women's side, redshirt junior Taryn Rawlings (20:40.00) and redshirt junior Aoibhe Richardson (20:43.00) also finished in the top-10, placing fourth and fifth overall. Seniors Virag Weiler (21:20.90) and Courtney Cox (21:55.50) rounded out the final point scoring positions, crossing the line 12
th and 17
th respectively.
Â
"Our team really impressed me today," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "Our top three were awesome and Virag and Courtney stepped up to really help the team. Lacey also had a nice race. Now we can focus on regionals in two weeks."
The top 10 finishers at the meet earned All-WCC first team, while 11 through 15 earned honorable mention. For the women, LaRocco, Rawlings, and Richardson each earned All-WCC first team, while Weiler garnered All-WCC Honorable Mention. For the men, Hauger and Osen claimed All-WCC first team, while Webb and Kiprono earned honorable mention.Â
