INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The complete NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) were released on Wednesday and the University of Portland continue to report elite numbers. Each of Portland's varsity athletics programs from the 2016-17 multi-year calculation rated high on the scale and no teams are subject to penalties.
Among the four Division I universities in the state of Oregon, UP posted or matched the highest APR multi-year rates in 13 of the 14 sports in which the data is provided.
Looking at the 2016-17 single-year data, Portland had an overall rating of 989. Beach volleyball and men's tennis earned
APR Public Recognition Awards for registering in the Top 10 percent nationally of their respective sports. Nine different Pilot programs posted a perfect 1,000 APR score for the 2016-17 cohort: beach volleyball, men's tennis, men's track & field, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's soccer, women's tennis, women's track & field and women's volleyball.
"APR is a valuation metric that carries great significance in collegiate athletics," said Scott Leykam, Portland's Vice President for Athletics. "Our coaches have done an excellent job of identifying and recruiting top quality student-athletes. We have increased our academic support staff, in both numbers and resources, and that group continues to provide excellent service. Most importantly, our student-athletes recognize the value and importance of getting a quality education and have worked extremely hard in both competition, as well as in the classroom."
Eleven Pilot programs either maintained or increased their multi-year APR score from the previous year and eight teams posted scores at or above 990.
To compete in the 2018-19 postseason, teams must achieve a 930 four-year APR. NCAA member representatives chose the 930 standard because that score predicts a 50 percent graduation rate for the team. Additionally, teams must earn at least a 930 APR to avoid penalties.
Every Division I sports team across the nation calculates its Academic Progress Rate each academic year, like a report card. Student-athletes each semester earn one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating.
Since the Division I membership created the Academic Performance Program 14 years ago, more than 16,000 former athletes earned APR points for their prior teams by returning to college after their eligibility ran out and earning a degree. Those students generally do not count in graduation rates because they earn degrees outside the six-year window allowed by both the federal graduation rate and the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate.
Rates are an average of each school's performance for the past four years. National aggregates are based on all teams with usable data at the time of analysis. APRs for each team, lists of teams receiving public recognition and those receiving sanctions are available online through the NCAA's
searchable database. The national analysis is based on member-provided data from April 6.
