PORTLAND, Ore. --- Brett Gillis, who hails from Everett, Wash., and is a standout at both shortstop and on the mound for Cascade High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Portland Pilots baseball program as a freshman, announced head coach Geoff Loomis.
Â
"We're very fortunate to be adding a player of Brett's ability to what is already an exceptional 2018 class," Loomis said. "Brett has the potential to be a two-way player at UP. We've seen him both pitch and hit at a very high level. He also played quarterback for his high school football team, so he brings some valuable leadership tools as well. We are very pleased to be welcoming Brett and his family to The Bluff."
Â
This spring, Gillis landed on the Washington All-State team after hitting .500 at the plate for the Bruins. He also went a perfect 5-0 on the mound with a 1.47 ERA, and the 6-foot-2 righty helped lead the team to a Wesco 4A League championship.
Â
Gillis was a first-team all-league selection in 2017 and 2018 as an infielder, and he also landed on the conference first team as a pitcher during his senior campaign. He earned second-team honors on the mound in 2016, he landed honorable mention accolades in 2016, he nabbed three gold gloves, and he boasted a fielding percentage of .983.
Â
On the football field, Gillis earned three letters as a quarterback for the Bruins, and he was named the offensive player of the year his senior year.
