Box Score SEATTLE, Wash. – Playing with its most experienced player at the top of the lineup due to injury, Portland gave Washington a tough match in the men's tennis season opener for both programs on Saturday night. The Huskies pulled out the 6-1 win, but the Pilots competed with five true freshmen and a sophomore in the lineup.
Senior leader Carlos Donat was unavailable due to injury, but others stepped up.
Freshman Sema Pankin posted an impressive 6-3, 7-5 win against Jack Davis at No. 2 singles for Portland's point. Freshman Nicklas Oberg pushed senior Enzo Sommer to three sets at the No. 1 position.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Issa Yoshida dropped a pair of tiebreakers to Ernesto Turegano, while sophomore Tom Hann dropped a narrow 6-4, 7-5 decision at the No. 3 spot to junior Piers Foley.
The Huskies opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at the top two positions. Pankin and Yoshida were tied 4-4 with Kawika Lam and Adam Torocsik at No. 3 doubles when the point was clinched.
"I thought today was a great experience on the road for possibly a special group in the near future," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We lost a lot of big points, which showed our lack of experience. I am pretty sure I have never had a group of five freshmen in the starting lineup, especially in the opening match of the season, but we competed very well.
"Sema played great and won in straight sets and Nick battled their top senior all the way to the end. Tom and Issa were both right there as well. We need to play a bit better in doubles, which I think we will, but this was definitely a positive even though we didn't get the win."
Portland makes a quick turnaround and will host crosstown rival Portland State on Sunday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
