Portland Cross Country Teams Finish Second at WCC Championships
VAN NUYS, Calif. – The University of Portland men's and women's cross country teams both earned runner-up finishes at the 2019 West Coast Conference Championships hosted on Friday morning at Woodley Lakes Golf Course.
The Portland women finished the 6K race strong in the final 1,000 meters to move past San Francisco for a runner-up second-place finish to No. 4-ranked BYU. The Pilots clipped the Dons with a team score of 84 as USF finished with 90 points.
Anna Pataki placed 11th individually to lead Portland with a time of 20:46.56. Maddy Lyons had a huge close to the race, passing eight runners in the final 1K to place 19th with a time of 21:34.44. Victoria Weir and Sofia Castiglioni followed closely in 21st and 22nd place, respectively. Virag Weiler passed five runners in the final split to finish 24th place and close out the Pilot scorers.
In the men's 8K race, three Pilots earned All-WCC recognition led by Reuben Kiprono as the top Portland finisher in sixth place with a time of 23:49.72. Emmanuel Roudolff-Levisse and Michael Teran-Solano also earned all-league honors by placing eighth and 10th, respectively. Evert Silva (13th) and Riley Osen (14th) capped the Portland scorers.
No. 2 BYU took the team title in the men's race with 26 points, while the No. 12 Pilots finished with 51 points and No. 29 Gonzaga claimed third place with 63 points.
Both Portland teams will take a two-week break from competition to prepare for the NCAA West Regional Championships scheduled for Friday, Nov. 15 at the Colfax Golf Club in Colfax, Wash. The 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16 in Terra Haute, Ind.
