TERRA HAUTE, Ind. --- The Portland Pilots men's cross country team finished 10th at the 2019 NCAA Championships, which was hosted at the Lavern Gibson Championships Cross Country Course on a cold and rainy Saturday morning.
"It was a great year! I'm really proud of how hard the entire team worked and how well they supported and encouraged each other. Point-wise, we really weren't that far out of fifth place. The conditions were just so difficult it was hard to do much after the halfway point in the race," said head coach Rob Conner. "Everyone hung tough, however, and got us a top-10 national finish which is something special even if our goals were set higher."
Senior Caleb Webb was Portland's top finisher, earning All-America honors with his performance. He finished the 10K in 31:13.5 for 31st place, earning his first All-American recognition.
Next to cross the line was Emmanuel Roudolff-Levisse in 31:29.9, who was out in front for the Pilots in the beginning parts of the race. Roudolff-Levisse just missed earning All-American, placing 49th overall.
Five of Portland's seven runners were making their first appearance at the national meet. Michael Teran-Solano (78th), Evert Silva (98th), and Riley Osen (114th) scored for the Pilots, while Reuben Kiprono (133rd) and Joe Horen (186th) ran solid races as well.
"I am extremely proud of Caleb for his leadership this year. He came back for his fifth year of eligibility in order to lead us and to finish his career as an All American. Mission accomplished," said Conner. "I am also grateful for Manu's contribution to the program over the past three seasons. He certainly left his mark as one of the greatest Pilots of all time. Our other two seniors also made important contributions to our success this year. Michael Teran-Solano had a big race today and one one of the few people on the entire field that was able to move up. Joe Horen had a magical year. I am very happy for him to be able to close out his senior year at the national meet!"
This was the 20th NCAA Championships appearance for the Pilots, and the 10th top-10 team finish. Webb is Portland's 22nd All-American honoree at the NCAA meet.
The tenth-place finish caps an impressive season that featured Portland winning its third straight NCAA West Region team title. Roudolff-Levisse, Silva, Teran-Solano, Osen and Horen each garnered All-West Region honors.
