SEATTLE, Wash. --- The fall rowing season came to completion for the Portland Pilots on Sunday morning as they competed at the 40th Annual Head of the Lake in Seattle, where they put three boats on the water. The Pilots sent two eights, along with a single four to compete in the three-mile course.
"Overall the team felt good about the races and performances," said head coach Pasha Spencer. "We have a solid base from this fall and will take that into winter training."
The varsity eight boat, coxswained by Emma Papenhausen and stroked by Desi Petrova, finished with a time of 18:39.468, good for 4
th place among seven boats. The University of Washington finished atop the leaderboard, with two Huskie boats placing 1
st & 2
nd, the winning time coming in at 14:04.773.
Portland's 2
nd varsity eight squad, coxswained by Allison Palazzotto and stroked by Olivia Zilavy, finished in third place in their heat with a time of 19:27.496. The Huskies once again came in 1
st in the JV race, finishing with a time of 18:04.602.
In the Pilots last race of the event, the varsity four boat finished in third place with a time of 23:41.522. The four's, coxswained by Sage Iona and stroked by Marissa Frazzini, closed the gap with Seattle U due to a penalty awarded to the Redhawks that docked 30 seconds off their raw time. Neither team could best British Columbia however, who posted a time of 20:18.028.
Portland returns to the water next Spring, competing in the PLU Invite at Lakewood, Washington. The race will take place at the American Lake on March 7
th, 2020.
