EDGEWOOD, Wash. – The Portland women's tennis team defeated Seattle University by a 6-1 margin on Friday morning at the Jupiter Tennis Center. The Pilots evened their record at 2-2 with the win, while the Redhawks fell to 2-3 overall.
Playing in frigid cold conditions, the Pilots were able to grab the early momentum by claiming the doubles point. Emily Soares and Lourdes Ramalle won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles and then Laura Okazaki and Angela Schuster clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Jelena Lukic posted a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and freshman Marija Elenova won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. Ramalle then clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles.
Soares completed a three-set comeback at No. 3 singles and then freshman Angela Schuster concluded the scoring with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 6 position.
Seattle's lone point came at No. 2 singles where Kyra Jung won in straight sets.
Portland was scheduled to take on crosstown rival Portland State on Sunday at Vancouver Tennis Center in Vancouver, Wash., but that match will be rescheduled for a later date due to inclement weather forecasted. The Pilots will next host Montana State on Friday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center.
