PROVO, Utah – The BYU Cougars recorded a 4-1 win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference women's tennis dual match on Friday at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts. BYU improves to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Pilots fall to 6-5 and 1-1 in the WCC.
Portland was without sophomore Raphaelle Leblanc (ill) who normally slots into the No. 2 singles position due to illness.
The Cougars took the early lead by securing the doubles point with comfortable wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Portland's top doubles tandem of Jelena Lukic and Anna Oberg were trailing 5-4 when the point was clinched.
Pilot sophomore Lourdes Ramalle evened the scoring with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Katie Fitt at No. 4 singles. BYU responded with straight set wins at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 positions to secure the team win.
Lukic was leading Anastasia Abramyan 3-1 in the third set at No. 1 singles when the match was decided.
Portland will continue its dual season next week with a pair of matches in San Diego. The Pilots will visit Point Loma for a non-conference match on Thursday at 3 p.m., and then return to WCC play at University of San Diego on Friday at noon.
