SANTA CRUZ, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots beach volleyball team secured a fifth place finish at the WCC Mid-Season Invitational, defeating the Pacific Tigers 4-1 at the Santa Cruz Beach in Santa Cruz, Calif. The Pilots fought hard to start the day, but fell to the San Francisco Dons 1-4.
Portland won four duals in a row against Pacific, grabbing their second win in two days against the Tigers. The match featured two three-set duals, with pair Freshman Sarah Strong and Sophomore Emma Scanlan going back to back with Freshman Jessie Brigham and Senior Reghan Pukis to claim the win.
Senior Lauren Naatz and Sophomore Kellie Hughes finished Portland's tournament in style, securing a convincing pair win with scores of 21-8 and 21-8.
Junior Katie Barker and Sophomore Carey Williams were the lone Pilots to take a victory in Portland's match against San Francisco, winning with scores of 22-20 and 21-19.
The Pilots finish the weekend with a match against San Jose State, starting at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
