PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland women's tennis team improved to 2-2 in West Coast Conference play with a 4-2 win against San Francisco on Saturday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots improve to 7-7 overall, while the Dons fall to 8-8 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Portland grabbed the early lead by taking the doubles point with wins at the top two spots. Junior Emily Soares and freshman Marija Elenova cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, while juniors Jelena Lukic and Anna Oberg clinched with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 position. Sophomore Laura Okazaki and freshman Angela Schuster were leading 5-3 at No. 3 doubles when the point was clinched.
San Francisco tied the score with a win at No. 2 singles, but the Pilots responded with wins in straight sets by Lukic and Soares at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, respectively, to jump ahead by a 3-1 margin. USF then took another point with a win at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore Lourdes Ramalle provided the clinching point with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Rita Colyer. Ramalle beat Schuster to get the winner, as the Pilot freshman was leading Shanna Dos Santos 6-4, 5-1 when the match was decided.
Portland continues WCC play next week with a tough road trip against No. 43 Loyola Marymount on Friday and No. 8 Pepperdine on Saturday.
