PORTLAND, Ore. --- Emme Shearer, a guard out of Auckland, New Zealand, has committed to the University of Portland women's basketball program and will join the Pilots as a freshman, announced head coach Michael Meek. Shearer attends Westlake Girls High School, and she played for New Zealand's U-16 and U-19 National Teams.
"We are excited and thrilled to have Emme join the Pilot family," Meek said. "She comes with high-level National Team experience and International play. She is an incredible all-around athlete who competes with great energy. Most importantly everyone I talk with raves about what an outstanding teammate and student she is, who also has a great desire and work ethic to improve. Those attributes will fit well with the high character of our current team and what we are striving towards as a program."
Shearer leads the Westlake Girls Premier Team in scoring, and she once poured in a career-high 41 points during a game. Westlake finished fourth at the 2019 Secondary Schools Basketball Nationals and they were third in 2018, with Shearer landing on the all-tournament team both years. Westlake was also the runner-up at the 2019 Auckland Secondary Schools Premier Basketball Championship.
At age 17, Shearer was the youngest member of New Zealand Basketball's Tall Ferns squad in 2019, and she played on the U-18 National 3x3 Basketball team that same year. Shearer earned more all-tournament honors as her Harbor club team won the U-19 Nationals in 2019, and they placed third at the U-17 Nationals in 2017. With the Harbor Breeze, Shearer averaged 9.2 points and 4.6 rebounds during her rookie season as the team finished second in the WBC League.
